North Campus First-Year Experience
Since 2001, Cornell’s first-year students have lived in new, state-of-the-art residence halls and renovated halls on North Campus. The North Campus community encourages freshmen to forge a class identity, and special programs ease the transition from high school to college. Informal interactions with faculty give first-year students opportunities to build relationships with professors. Gifts to name spaces on North Campus—which is fully paid for—help fund additional living and learning opportunities for sophomores, transfers, and upper-level students on West Campus.
Types of support
Cornell welcomes gifts of all sizes. Select naming opportunities are described below.
Faculty-in-residence apartments: $500,000
Integral to the community design of North Campus are faculty-in-residence apartments. Because each space houses a faculty member and his or her family, incoming students get to know faculty as more than a face in the classroom. This feature of community by design has won raves from students and faculty alike.
North Campus Appel Commons private dining room: $500,000
Appel Commons anchors the North Campus complex. Its private dining room is the setting for small receptions and the very popular faculty-student dinners—informal occasions combining cuisine and conversation on a select topic. Partitions can divide the space into three smaller rooms to create even more intimate gatherings.
